The Mod® Electronics MOD 102 is a great place to start for those interested in building their own tube amp. It is based on a classic American tube-circuit design combined with a British-style Class A output tube section. At low volume it produces a clean, chimey tone that moves into smooth overdrive at higher volumes. All parts are included along with a pre-drilled steel chassis, wire, and tubes (1 EL84 and 1 12AX7). Puts out at least 5 watts. The chassis layout is open for easy assembly using the clear, easy to follow instructions. You will need your own tools and solder.

MOD 102 Guitar Amp Kit Features:

  • All Tube Design (solid-state diodes used only for full-wave rectification)
  • 5W output power into 8 Ohm

I enjoyed building this kit - the directions were easy to follow and I only had one error (on my end) that was an easy fix. I would recommend looking through all the parts first, and running the wiring FIRST, before any components. If I had planned out all the wiring first, it would be easier to mod later on. My finished product had to compromise on some top/bottom of the turrets.

As it is, I'm happy with the sound that it makes! It's not going to be a HiWatt, it's designed to be a raunchy little amp. The tone controls are surprisingly flexible and the amp has a pretty low noise floor. I have a few ideas on how to get it even lower, but first I'm going to enjoy playing it for a while! Next up, a head cab, or maybe making it a combo amp....

Purchased this kit from Antique Electronic Supply in for my 1st amp build. Instructions were clear, with no confusing or ambiguous steps. Layout diagrams were very helpful, but I recommend following the written step-by-step instructions when assembling. Assembly and soldering was easy. I found only one mistake (my fault) when I double-checked my work, easy fix. Checked all the VDC voltages at the given test points--measured less than 3% variance. Fired up the amp and very pleased with the sound; very! Nice breakup. I look forward to modifying the circuit in the future. Will do business with Antique Electronic Supply again.

I give the kit 5 stars and mine sounds great! I assembled it in around 8 hours and found no errors in the instructions, which were clear. I agree with the reviewer who griped about the labels, which are 1 star. Everything else is fine and it is obvious that a great deal of thought went into component selection. Mine worked the first time I tried it!

My first amp build!! Sounds great!! Just follow the easy instructions and it will work. I have little electronic skills, but it works and would recommend this to anyone wanting a hand wired amp. I built mine in about 14 hrs.

Good little kit. I built it in one evening, pretty easy build. I like the sound of the finished amp, nice and chimey, with a mild overdrive up until its close to cranked, where it gets pretty raunchy. It is very easy to hear the differences in various preamp tubes when swapping them, one of My favorite things about the amp.

This makes for a nice little practice amp. I have it running into a 16 ohm Jensen MOD 10 with a paralleled 16 ohm resistor. This setup is a little too loud for apartment use, although I can run the volume high enough to get a little dirt going so it should work out fine.

This is a good kit if You want to work on point to point wiring and soldering skills. The included instructions are pretty thorough, of course it helps to keep referring to the schematic as You work.

Overall I like the kit and amp. I have a few ideas for mods, which should be pretty easy given the nature of the thing.
