Diode - OA74A, Amperex, Germanium, Black Glass
NOS OA74A germanium diodes from Amperex. OA74A diodes were used in many vintage electronics and also make for great clipping diodes in stompbox effects pedals. The red end is the cathode. OA74A is a near-exact replacement for OA81.

This is a great diode for use in guitar pedals as a hard or soft clipper. Smooth balanced frequency response. But know these are NOS and 3 out of the first 4 I pulled out of the bag were open circuit (measured some low capacitance and nothing more). I called AE right away and they sent replacements. Excellent customer service.
If you want a great sounding diode and are willing to put up with a few that might not work... this is a good option. If you want an almost as good option with less hassle, use 1N34A from two manufactures. I have found that 1N34A's are all pretty good but they are just different enough by brand that they are different. It almost always works well to use two different 1N34A at the same time. They each smooth out the other. Kind of the way a Celestion Vintage 30 pairs well with a Celestion G12H-30.
Anyway... 0A74 is an excellent old school sounding germanium diode with old school reliability too.
