The JJ EL-844 is a new version of the EL84 tube. It has Reduced power and a more balanced frequency response. Spiral Filament. It reduces headroom by approximately 25%, which allows it to achieve overdrive at lower volume levels.

The JJ EL844 has a maximum dissipation of 9 watts, as opposed to 12 watts of a standard EL84. The plate is physically smaller than the standard EL84. When using the JJ EL844 in and amplifier with fixed bias, bias should be set accordingly so the tubes at idle are between 50 - 70% of maximum dissipation.

When using the JJ EL844 in an amplifier with cathode bias, the bias resistor may need to be changed to keep the tubes from exceeding their 9 watt maximum dissipation.

Put a matched pair of these in my amp along with a new greenback. I am very happy with the results. I've another amp this is now under the same renovations more or less. Price is good and delivery fast. Five stars.

Arrived promptly, well packaged!! This tube swapped out easily on my single-tube Class A amp. I like it's chime-y harmonics. It's not as powerful as an EL-84 but it's no weak sister either. Best described as "breaks up a bit sooner" to my ears.

Cool tubes. Do what they say. They're basically quieter EL84s. The break up earlier too. Sound great.

liking this a lot

In my Jet City 20HV it does sound okay with the bias setting for the stock Chinese tubes. At Clean levels, it does seem more transparent than stock. Turning up the volume, you find the power amp break-up point quicker. Since my amp stays at home now, this is a good thing. I now call my amp a JCA 15HV.
