There is more mass to the knob as compared to a top hat style knob. Some people prefer the larger surface area as it can be easier to grab with a singer finger.

They make push-pull pots much easier to operate.

We do not have sizing on the original 1952 potentiometer shafts to verify, but these are designed for use with a standard 1/4" fine knurled shaft pot. Some people have found that very gently crimping the two sections of the split shaft slightly closer together made the knobs fit better. Naturally, if doing this, it is done at one's own risk and we can not assume responsibility for damaged potentiometers.

To add to the answer, if you sandwich an item between the split shaft (a popsicle stick or 2) before squeezing the splits closer, you will prevent damage....CAUTION! The split shaft is not delicate but neither is it strong so insert something that will barely fit so you don’t over do it....just a slight squeeze is all it takes. Also, wrap masking tape on jaws of pliers(or a napkin) so you don’t mar the pot shaft splines.

Hi, the numbers on these are embossed. There is very little visual difference but the numbers on these are slightly more 3D. I hope that helps.
