It all depends on the circuit you are working on. For example the Gibson EBO bass uses SKU: P-H394.

For something like a filter like a Gibson Varitone in an ES355, I would probably use the shorting switch. Either one will have some drawbacks. A non-shorting switch will pop as it opens and closes between contacts. The other will combine two capacitors and two resistors together until the switch is in position, causing some momentary odd filtering combinations between positions. IF you have an active preamp, you may want to stay away from shorting switches unless you are sure nothing critical will be shorted. For passive component (no battery & no phantom power) switching, pickups, caps, resistors, coils, either one of them is fine.
