Product Reviews
I bought this transformer for a Valve Junior. I didn't notice a huge improvement with my guitars. I noticed a huge improvement with my basses though. With the stock transformer, the sound was way too thin to use with my basses. The amp sounds really good now with the new transformer.
I was working on a Motorola 397 car radio with a blown output transformer. I found this one on the web and ordered it. The radio had two sets of mounting holes, so this one fit perfectly even though it was a little bigger than the original. The color coded wires made the connections a snap. Works perfectly for a 6AQ5 output tube.
I did the next review below and should have said I used this in a Epiphone Valve Junior version TWO, not 3. My mistake, Thank you
Very good value! Major improvement in clean sound over stock 7.5k OT in Epiphone Valve Junior version 3. Also still breaks up nice although gratefully not as early. Pulling 43ma at 270V through it, barely gets warm. The laminates & core look "potted" i.e. like dipped in varnish! no vibration, very solid
Sure glad this is available. New build of these makes them beefier then the older ones. Perfect small single ended transformer for 6AQ5, 6V6 and power triode 6FD7.
Used as a replacement in an antique Hammarlund HQ-120X communications receiver. This old radio has a single-ended 6V6 ouput amp. Excellent fit. Good audio response, actually better than expected. Very pleased. Thanks for making a decent transformer available at a great price.
I only gave it 4 stars because the one I recurved doesn’t look like the transformer pictured on Antique Electronics website. The one on the website looks like a vintage unit and the one they send looks like a cheep Chinese unit. Other than that it works great but looks cheep.
Great product works great very well built highly recommended
Worked well in a DGSE-1 amplifier I built, There is a thread on AudioKarma about building this amplifier, it worked well the first time it was played, and always thereafter.
The only small thing was the transformers were not separated in shipping and rubbed against one another, they still worked well, but had rub marks on them.Otherwise a great experience shopping at AES
I used these in a DGSE-1 EL84SE amp based on a Magnavox 8600. I wanted to see what a very inexpensive SE amp could sound like. I find it very enjoyable. Prior to that, I had a not-so-cheap KT88SEUL using Edcor CXSE 25watt output transformers. So, I do have something to compare these to.
About a year before I built the DGSE-1, I acquired a Pilot 402 which had pip-squeak OPT and made me question whether huge OPT iron was really necessary. I couldn't believe how those little OPT could develop such satisfying bass.
True, these small OPT may not be for the audiophile, but after asking other builders of the DGSE-1 whether they noticed a difference using GXSE or Hammond, I was told that they really couldn't justify the additional cost.
For me, these are cheap and cheerful and have enough bass to satisfy. I don't feel the need to build anything more substantial. This amp was less than $200 in parts. My previous amp was $600 in parts. Maybe it was slightly better, but not 3X better!
My speakers roll off around 50Hz, so these OPT are just what I need. And most folks who use these are not building an amp for pop or rap music. For jazz, acoustic or soft rock, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
