This is the original case design that transistors used in the 50s before the TO-1 case was introduced by the Japanese (more specifically Toshiba). These are a common sight in US made transistor radios like the Regency TR-1. The only difference is that this is an npn transistor instead of the pnp type which most transistor radios use exclusively.
