Product Reviews
I have a "72 Fender Twin and I just had my tech guy go through and re-cap it, fixed the tremolo and a few knobs and we decided to put new tubes in it so it should be all ready to go for weekend club gigs. Although tubes are expensive now, I went for a mid priced set of 4 of the Tung-Sol Reissues and so far they are doing a great job. My tech did a slightly softer bias of them, I think around 66 or so, so I'm hoping that will help give them a longer life span. I like the Fender clean sound and these tubes are clean and quiet. Can't wait to try it on a few gigs with the band. That's the true test!
I received my pair of matched Tung-Sol 6L6GC STR very well-packaged and in perfect working condition. I have been using these tubes for the last few weeks in an Elekit TU-8800 integrated tube amp, and I like their sound signature in my system. I can recommend Antique Electronic Supply for their responsiveness and customer care and will certainly buy again in the future.
With the shortages of tubes, & no American tubes being made anymore, I contacted a longtime electronics guru friend of mine to help me in my search for replacements for my Fender amps. He and I went through availability and quality of all and both agreed on these.
I'm well pleased so far, and will be using them for sometime to come.
Thx, Pat
Excellent service and products!
A very good and robust Modern built version of the 6L6GC power tube.
I purchased a matched Quad set of these output tubes. They matched perfectly for transconductance on my Hicok and small variance within 1 or 2mA for idle current inside a fully serviced vintage BF Twin.
The tubes are very robust and I was able to get approx 26 watts idle dissapation per tube with barely any perceptiable glow of the plates when played fairly hard while viewing with the lights of in a dark room.
Increasing the bias and reducing the current the soft creamy harmonic rich tone remained mostly the same with static plate dissapation as low as approx 15 watts per tube before perception of tonal significant change with less of the creamy distortion present and the tone started to brighten up. I biased at around 19 watts which pushes the tube a bit on the harder side. I am skeptical how long the tone remains the same. But will update if any major reduction of tone occurs in the future after the amp has more than a few hours running hot like this.
So far I like the consistent tone within a wide range of bias.
Overall tone is decent and for most end users ears it is at least comparable enough to most average vintage tube. Certainly no worse than other modern tubes. Not sure if they are as tough as JJ and much noticeable sonic difference in comparison. The JJ sounds clear and sterile while the TungSol R.I. seems a bit more colorful contributes to shaping the tone in a pleasent way.
So I like the tonal abilities of the tube.
I like the visual robustful appearance of the inner construction and if you are very vain the Tung Sol labeling looks cool inside your vintage rig too.The price and availability of this tube is nearly equal to the JJ and overall this tube is a winner. I like it alot.
I wonder how many brands are the same tube with different labeling?
Great sounding tunes - purchased a matched pair and bias was right on the spot once compared with the test data that was provided. Would certainly buy again!
Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with the quality of Tung Sol tubes. I Purchased a brand new out of the box Fender super reverb reissue. This amp sounded great out of the box. However, I wanted to change the valves to a better tube with more tone. I Purchased a complete new set of Tung sols. 12ax7s,12at7s,5751,6l6-strs. I also installed a solid state rectifier. I installed the new set when I received the tubes, set a proper bias, let the tubes burn in slightly and rechecked bias. the first thing i noticed is the 5751 was microphonice right out of the box. I tried it in a different amp since a tube can be microphonic in one amp and not another. Still, microphonic. I ended up throwing away a brand new $25 tube since it was defective. I reinstalled the factory GT12ax7. Unfortunately now with less than 10 hours of time on this amp I started to hear a rattle while I played, even at lower volumes. So I start to investigate and I found one of the 6L6-STRs had terrible filament rattle. I pulled the tube and tapped it with my finger and the rattle was very loud. Again, swapped it in a different amp and the rattle is still present. so once again. I will be throwing away a $25 dollar tube that was a matched pair I purchased for $50. Now I have to buy a new pair of 6L6s and a 12ax7 or 5751. So that's at least $75 that I already spent. I don't know if it Tung sols quality or possibly the handling of the tube prior to shipping but this is a costly problem I hope will be fixed by using a different tube. I never contacted Antique Electronic Supply over this problem since tubes do not come with a warranty. Its unfortunately luck of the draw. They sound great if you get a good tube.
I am very satisfied with Tung Sol 6L6GC STR's!
My recent order was delivered promptly. The matched pair of Tung-Sols was well packaged. I replaced the PS caps in my 90's era Carvin X60 and installed the new Tung-Sols.. Everything sounds great!
I have been purchasing tubes from Antique Electronic Supply for years and have been 100% satisfied.
